Anti-Aging: Aminoguanidine To Prevent Protein Cross-Linking.

chemical structure of aminoguanidineAminoguanidine Molecule via Wikipedia

Pimagedine, also known as aminoguanidine, is an investigational drug for the treatment of diabetic nephropathy. It is a diamine oxidase and nitric oxide synthase inhibitor. It acts to reduce levels of advanced glycation (or advanced glycosylation) end products (sometimes referred to collectively as “AGE”) through interacting with 3-deoxyglucosone. In brief, it is thought that this guanidine is involved in regulating the metabolism of sugars, and possibly of certain fats.

It is thought that the above process (AGE formation) is a precipitator of cross-linking of proteins, which might be implicated in causing cataracts, macular degeneration, diabetes-related renal (kidney) failure, atherosclerosis, and production of “bad” cholesterol, as well as a host of other disabilities commonly associated with Human aging. Aminoguanidine, as an AGE-inhibitor, may serve to slow the protein cross-linking process and thereby slow some of the effects of aging. Some examples of the degradation of organic life brought about by this same phenomenon may include the rapid browning of an apple after it has been sliced in half, or the discoloration, curling (withering or wilting) and toughening of lettuce and other leafy green vegetables when they are left in the open air.

Many longevity activists and enthusiasts are experimenting with oral dosages of this substance ranging from 75 milligrams (once to three times daily) as part of their anti-aging regimen. At this moment, most of the favorable information regarding this supplement is anecdotal, but the cross-linking theory of aging is fairly well accepted.

While the substance has not been approved by the United States FDA as of the date of this writing, it is readily available without a prescription and it is not a controlled or restricted substance.

It is also interesting to note, just as a sideline, that Aminoguanidines and their derivatives are also being developed for energetic material applications. Thorough combustion of these compounds can produce voluminous non-toxic gases, at moderate temperatures, with a minimum of smoke or dust. This characteristic favors application to explosive gas generators for automotive airbags, and solid-rocket propellants that generate high thrust per kilogram, while emitting minimal visible smoke or infrared radiation (useful militarily while greatly reducing any negative environmental impact -- doesn't this sound like a bit of an oxymoron...or is it just me?).

While this potential youth-extending supplement is seemingly non-psychotropic and is well-tolerated by the body with minimal, if any reported side effects at the above dosing range, if you are going to add this one to your “stack,” please do so with caution. Ask for professional advice before experimenting with this guanidine compound if you are taking any other pre-emptive anti-diabetic drugs or supplements, or if you are being treated for other health-related issues.
